Summarizer's External Links Worksheet Report

The following table explains the items that appear on the "External Links" worksheet. All information relates to the active workbook at the time Summarizer was run.

Item Details
External Link name of external workbook to which active workbook is linked
Location Type type of object in which external link has been located (either "Chart", "Drawing Object", "Worksheet" or "Name")
Location name of object in which external link has been found

If the active workbook contains no external links, the "External Links" worksheet will be empty except for the following text: "Workbook contains no external links"

If an external link cannot be located it will still be listed on the worksheet. To make the situation clear, Summarizer will display "Could not locate link" in the "Location Type" column.

The Process of Finding External Links

External links can appear in numerous places within Excel workbooks. Because Summarizer is a reporting tool (as opposed to a specialist utility for finding external links), it does not check every conceivable location in which external links can appear.

Summarizer checks the following for external links:

  • worksheet formulas
  • chart series
  • defined names
  • drawing objects (such as lines and arcs)

If Summarizer finds an external link in a worksheet formula it reports the worksheet as containing an external link. Summarizer does not list the cell or cells containing the external link. If you want to find these cells, use UltraSleuth AdvancedSearch or Find (under Edit on Excel’s main menu) to locate them.
