As a twentysomething in Manhattan, Scarlett Johansson would see David Yurman's fine jewelry ads plastered around the city. "I always felt like if you were in a Yurman campaign, you’d really made it," she tells BAZAAR. So starring in the luxury brand's new campaign was an absolute no-brainer for her.
Yurman photographed the new mom and two-time Academy Award-nominated actress alongside Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding as its first-ever celebrity ambassador duo. They're shot by Lachlan Bailey at elite NYC hotspots like The Carlyle's famed Bemelmen's Bar, which comes with white-glove service and a socialite-studded guest list. A fan of David Yurman's signature cuff bracelets and delicate necklaces, Johansson wears them casually stacked in the ads for an elevated all-purpose look.
Johansson felt especially drawn to David Yurman's latest project because it reminded her of everything she adores about the big city. "Having grown up in Greenwich Village, I know New York City like the back of my hand. I feel most comfortable in the rhythm and pacing of this city because everything feels possible. It’s unpredictable and offers a sense of wonder, which makes every day feel important and exciting."
"I grew up spending most of my weekends with my grandma, Dorothy," the movie star adds. "There were many places we visited together, depending on what struck our mood. Going to the Staten Island Zoo and taking the ferry was a favorite. We also loved going for Dim Sum in Chinatown on Mott Street on Sundays. Every time I have shrimp dumplings, I think of my grandma. We used to love passing the fish markets and looking at all the live eels in the buckets. After lunch, we would get custard buns on Canal Street."
She continues, "It’s been such a difficult couple of years for many people, spending time apart from our family and friends and the regular routines that give us a sense of self and peace of mind. The 'Come Closer' campaign is about recapturing our connectivity with our loved ones, but also with our environment and ourselves."
Despite being one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, the star says that she keeps her everyday jewelry edit simple, calling on more dramatic pieces for special occasions. "I look for jewelry that makes a statement – whether that be through its artistic design, color, or length. I’ve been collecting Victorian jewelry since I was a teenager and am fond of elaborate and decadent jewelry styles that feature mixed metals and stones."
But what she likes best is the kind of jewelry you can pile on. "I’m a sucker for a beautiful chain," she divulges. "Yurman has so many of them and they are so gorgeously hand-crafted. I love layering all different lengths and links, for day and night."
