13 Things Lizzie and Kathryn Fortunato Would Buy Again

"We might not shop a lot, but we love to shop."

Need some shopping inspiration? In Lucky 13, fashion tastemakers share the 13 items they love so much, they’d hit “Add to Cart” twice.

Logging on to a video chat with Lizzie and Kathryn Fortunato, the twin sisters behind jewelry brand Lizzie Fortunato, I can't help but instantly notice their outfits. The creative director and director of sales and operations, respectively, sit side-by-side in identical turtleneck sweaters with slightly slouchy collars—in different shades of citrus green and orange—and crafty pendant necklaces. They swear they didn't plan to coordinate for their Lucky 13 appearance but when you're fashion-inclined twin sisters who run a statement jewelry label, matching is bound to happen.

"We share clothes and we have a quite similar aesthetic. If anything, I might lean a little bit funky with dramatic silhouettes," Lizzie muses. Kathryn, meanwhile, goes for more tailored shapes—a holdover from her early career in finance—but with adventurous styling courtesy of her twin. "Lizzie can really shop a closet, and mix and match and layer in a way that only the creative director could," Kathryn says. "She sees things in my closet that I wouldn't have put together."

Since they started their business in 2008, the two always intended to "dress original dressers," as Lizzie says, in pieces with unique, mixed materials. The shapes have downsized from the #PutaBibonIt statement necklaces of the past to the daintier pendants of the present. "We were growing up," Kathryn explains, "and our collections needed to grow up with us." A laser-focus on tactile elements (like fabric and deadstock wood) and one-of-a-kind stones has been consistent, along with making as much by hand as possible.

Kathryn and Lizzie shop in the same way they run their brand: slowly and intentionally. But when a brand has a deeply personal backstory or a small-batch, handmade approach, it's likely to earn their purchase. (Fast fashion? They don't know her.) "I love the idea of supporting someone who feels very much in my shoes," Lizzie explains. And in the Lucky 13 selects ahead, the Fortunato sisters' selects all emphasize local and women-led businesses like theirs.

"I am eager for summer and to wear my favorite fisherman sandals. Emme Parsons really got these right—elegant but still durable, and not too utilitarian looking. I love these with a pair of jeans or a sarong and they’re making me ache for warmer weather." —Lizzie Fortunato

"When I wear these, even men in the grocery compliment me! I wear the Wynton and though it took a little time to get used to their weight, they are now definitely a huge part of my look and personality. I also get comments on them!" —Kathryn Fortunato

"I’m a big fan of rearranging furniture and updating 'top layer' items when you need a home refresh and I did just that with these Lisa Corti pillow covers. They’re bright and loud and bold and wonderful, and I love shopping from a family-run brand that champions craftsmanship. Note: They also make a sarong in the matching fabric, so I'll be looking just as good as my bedroom this summer!" —LF

"Fancy socks to wear with loafers in NYC's endless 'in between' weather (read: I want Spring so badly but it's still low 40's and my feet are freezing). I love the selection at one of my personal favorite boutiques, No. 6, which happens to be three blocks from our office so it's the perfect lunch-time-inspiration-pick-me-up!" —KF

"I recently discovered the new knitwear brand Eolas and fell in love with their joyful, vibrant pieces and their commitment to sustainability with their GRS-certified recycled cashmere. I've been living in their leopard print cardigan (very much a neutral in my book) but the lilac Mitch on my list for sprint (how cute over a swimsuit and jean shorts?)" —LF

" I normally use our office as a rotating sample closet of jewelry to wear for an evening out or for the weekend, but I have to say that our Blossom Chain Necklace might be coming home with me for good. While I normally gravitate towards our beaded styles, there is something about the oversized gold-plated large link chain, the cluster of charms, and the front toggle closer that makes this my favorite current style. I've been pairing it with everything—even jeans and a sweatshirt to dress up a weekend playground outfit." —KF

"These are my go-to earrings. They're handcrafted in 14K gold and are so lightweight I can easily wear them all day (and night), but they are still fun and poppy and way more exciting than a pair of diamond or pearl studs. If the pink's not for you, there's a range of available colors, but I think we all need a pop of pink in our lives." —LF

"Our dear friend Francesca del Balzo recently opened Porta-NYC, the perfectly curated, Studio Giancarlo Valle-designed home goods store on Atlantic Avenue (which happens to be across from Outline Boutique—another new favorite). This shop is beautiful and if you don't live in New York, their website is equally inspiring. I love Porta's collection of hand-painted dinner plates originating from Sienna, Italy. I recently gifted two of the these dinner plates to our good friend Max Stein for his engagement. These plates are so great because once you get one or two, you'll be inspired to build a whole collection!" —KF
